Apple is generally known to announce their new iPhones in September of every year and the release date would also fall within the same month. This year’s iPhone 8 will also be announced in September but a release date is not expected until some time in October or possibly November, due to technical difficulties as a result of the manufacturing of the device.
Three New iPhones Will Be Released This Year
Apple is expected to release three new iPhones this year: iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and the iPhone 8. All three devices are expected to be announced by Apple’s CEO Tim Cook at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino on September 12. The iPhone 7s and the iPhone 7s Plus are expected to be launched on September 22 while pre-orders of the iPhone 8 are expected to begin on September 15.
Why Is The iPhone 8 Delayed
There are two main reasons that the iPhone 8 will be delayed. Apple decided to get rid of their fingerprint reader from the front of the device and was initially trying to embed it under the display on the front. This initial move was unsuccessful and Apple had to change course. The second reason was due to technical difficulties Apple has been facing due to a rare challenge they encountered with the manufacturing of OLED displays for the new iPhone 8.
The Wall Street Journal explains that the production of OLED displays for the iPhone 8 are significantly different from that of Samsung’s Galaxy devices.
Apple and its suppliers also ran into trouble manufacturing the OLED displays. The display modules are being produced in Vietnam by an affiliate of Samsung Electronics. Unlike the OLED display module in Samsung’s own smartphones, in which the display and touch panel are integrated, iPhone’s display module has the touch panel outside of the display, according to a person familiar with the technology.
The iPhone manufacturing process requires more steps and more layers of adhesive and protective film than are involved in Samsung’s manufacturing process, the person familiar with the process said, creating a greater risk of manufacturing error.
Apple’s iPhone 8 is expected to be the most feature packed of all the previous iPhones, some new features include:
- 5.8 inch Edge-to-edge display – Similar to Samsung’s new Galaxy Smartphone the display on the new iPhone 8 is expected to cover the entire front of the device.
- No Home Button – To accommodate the full edge-to-edge display Apple will completely do away with the popular home button
- Facial Recognition – The lack of the Home button has created a need for added security features and Apple’s solution is to add a new hi-tech 3D facial recognition software which will utilize a 3D front facing camera.
- Wireless Charging – Finally Apple will step up and add wireless charging which is a well requested feature of iPhone fans.
Due to manufacturing difficulties it is assumed that the new iPhone 8 will be particularly difficult to come by especially in the early dates when it gets released. If you are eager to get your hands on the new Apple smartphone, then be sure to be online when the September 15 pre-order begins.
