If you frequent TVJ’s live stream at TelevisionJamaica.com, you would have noticed that the live stream is no longer available at this web address, you are now required to visit 1spotmedia.com for the live stream.
“1Spotmedia is the RJR group‘s Internet media service, offering the full range of the RJR Group television and radio brands, including TVJ, RETV, JNN, TVJSN, RJR94FM, FAMEFM, and HITZFM, in one spot online.”
The 1SpotMedia Android App and its iOS version were created by Univ Inc, and what it does is provide a portable version of 1Spotmedia’s web based media service for mobile users. The app is free to download and has a good number of free content which you can consume, free to watch videos are: Vybz kartel dancehall dark star, All together Sing, Layers of soul and TVJ Junior Schools Challenge quiz. There is also additional free content which requires you to sign up for a free member ship in order for you to watch them.
Please note that when signing into the app you should use the email address that you used to sign up and not the username which the app asks for (this is one of the numerous issues that Univ Inc needs to address).
The RJR Communications Group in particularly TVJ, has some really good content, so it is good to be able to access them on your mobile device if there is a need to do so, but using the 1Spot media app might not be as fun as you might initially have thought.
I have reviewed a few apps coming out of Jamaica, and I tend to like them allot, but the 1SpotMedia App for android didn’t fall into this category.
An app for the RJR Communications Group could not have been made free of cost, so my question to the RJR Communications Group is, how on earth did you approve of this App? The 1SpotMedia App has so many problems that it’s best if they had marketed the app as a very early beta release:
- User Login – First there is the user login which I mentioned earlier, the app requires that you login with your username and password, but after multiple failed attempts, I found out that you have to enter your email address and not your username in order to log in.
- The User Interface – 1SpotMedia is an app for the RJR Communications Group, a top media company in Jamaica, so I am absolutely puzzled as to why the app looks so cheap. It is as if very little effort went into creating it. There is just a single tone background with slideshow on top, a drop down menu top left, and images representing multiple selections of programs below.
- Video Streaming – Most mobile users in Jamaica are connected to the internet via Digicel or LIME’s 3G/ 4G data services. The data speeds on these services are sometimes slow and are not unlimited. With this in mind, media apps have to consume as little data as possible. The 1SpotMedia app streams all videos at the same quality with no option to select a lower quality if you don’t have a good data connection. This result in lots of pauses during video playback if you have a slow data connection, and if you are watching over 3G/ 4G it consumes allot of data.
- Another very annoying issue with the app is that videos are not full screen. None of the videos are full screen when watching on mobile and this is very annoying and it robs mobile users from experiencing the videos the way we are used to, when using apps such as the YouTube app for android.
On the Google Play Store the 1SpotMedia App is scarred by a large number of bad one star reviews, followed by comments from unsatisfied users. In the iTunes App Store the app has only one review from a user who gave it a one star rating, the user said it is “Laaaaam!!! Not working”.
Jamaicans like billions of people across the globe are downloading and using mobile apps that are created by top developers worldwide. There is a specific standard that we are accustomed to, and this app fails to reach that standard; the RJR Communications Group needs to know that this is a very poor representation of their brand.
